kithood
magpie and sunny were sweethearts ever since they were young. though their relationship had its complications due to sunny being a kittypet and magpie being a stray, they still made it work. they were willing to do so no matter the cost, they were pretty much inseparable. after many moons of being together, sunny and magpie began to dream what it would be like to have a family. all it took was sunny's owners to bring in a new kitten to make them consider it.
it didn't take them long to come into agreement that they wanted kittens. sunny even had a close friend she would trust to sire the kits. the only problem was the little barrier they had. magpie lived out in the vast territory, away from sunny's twolegs, and sunny lived cozied up in a soft, warm home.
magpie refused to become a kittypet. it just wasn't for her. she wanted sunny to join her in being a loner. sunny considered it for many days, wondering if she should abandon her home, her owners, to join her mate. it should be out of the question, but she had no experience in the wilderness, and was scared. however, as she took one last look at the newer, younger resident of her household, she knew that her owners would be just fine. she wanted to be with her mate.
with that, sunny departed from her twolegs, never to be seen again. she and magpie were quick to start a family when sunny made her choice, and soon enough, jay, rainy, mouse, and bramble were born.
mouse was born anxious. the world around her was so big and she was so tiny, and it did nothing but make her nervous. this didn't stop her from being curious of the territory that was just beyond her reach, but she was too scared to chase after it. the same couldn't be said for her family, who were all quite confident in their own ways.
jay was brash and headstrong, rainy was stoic and blunt, and bramble was friendly and adventurous. it would seem she inherited all of the jumpy gene.
when mouse's siblings wanted to roughhouse, mouse always found herself sticking to her mothers' side. specifically magpie's, the more levelheaded of the two. she much preferred the wistful stories her mothers would tell over being beaten up any day. this didn't mean she didn't play with them at all, but she preferred to play something like moss-ball.
her siblings always attempted to sneak away from their mothers' eye to go adventuring in the territories. mouse would always be dragged along with them, insisting they needed her with them, and so she would follow, if only to make sure they would be ok. someone had to make sure they didn't do anything to hurt themselves, after all. well, she always followed them anyways because she knew that they'd be caught. they always got caught. that was the only reassuring thing about attempting to leave the nest.
...well, until one night, maybe. during a quiet and peaceful night, mouse's family was fast asleep, including mouse herself. that was until she heard something that quickly drew her awake. when she jerked her head in the direction to the source of the noise, she found her brother leaving the den. mouse was horrified, scrambling after him as fast as she could.
when bramble found out his sister caught him, he only smiled, insisting she join him on his adventure. mouse opened her mouth to protest- they can't be out here like this! what if something tried to snatch them up? they were tiny enough to be snatched up! bramble only smiled once again, joking that his sister was way too paranoid. no predators ever came around! he then added that if they were together, nothing could snatch them up. they were safer in numbers!
with bramble's persuasion - and mouse's fallback of their mothers potentially discovering them before they could go - the she-kit followed after her brother through the thicket.
they wondered for a little while. just a little while was making mouse anxious, already unable to recognize their surroundings. bramble reminded her that nothing's bad happened, to which she quickly shot back - nothing yet. bramble only replied with nothing ever. despite her nervousness, mouse carried on, not wanting to leave her brother behind. she didn't want to think of the guilt she would face when she found out her brother never reappeared back in their nest.
they wondered for a long while. mostly because they got lost. mostly because bramble insisted they go further. mouse was just about to snap to him that they've gone far enough when something gigantic and terrible rustled in the bushed. when she turned around to see what the noise was, she was met with a creature she's never seen before. it was tall, with pointy ears and dusty ginger fur- with intimidating paws that promised it could crush whatever was beneath it. mouse shrieked, alerting both this large creature and bramble.
that's when everything turned to chaos. bramble and mouse were quick to scatter in any direction that wouldn't make them end up in the creature's jaws. the animal was determined to catch its meal, however, and chased the kittens. she wasn't sure how she managed to split up from bramble, when she lost sight of him, all she knew was she was running for her life.
she eventually hid underneath a small hole, something that seemed to be an abandoned den of sorts. somewhere the animal's narrow snout couldn't reach. miffed that it lost its prey, it gave up, leaving mouse quivering and in shock for quite awhile.
where was bramble? did that creature eat him?
where was her mom? where was her mama?
where was she?
little did she know, mouse ended up in monarchclan's territory. she spent an entire day hidden in that den, scared the animal would come back to find her. she thought the worst when something began snuffing at her little hideout, only to hear a voice call out for her.
she scrambled out of that hole as fast as she could, hoping it was someone she knew.
no, it was a stranger. a few strangers, in fact. when she relayed how she ended up in that little hole, they gave her pitying gazes, before telling her they told her they'll bring her somewhere warm with plenty of food.
she wanted to go home. she couldn't really tell them where home was, though. she didn't know. so she reluctantly nodded, only just realizing then how exhausted and hungry she was.
they promptly named her mousekit when brought into camp, making her stomach sink a little. this was her new home.
